The new album from Brooklyn noise-rock group Couch Slut has finally arrived. “Take A Chance on Rock n Roll” is the band’s first full-length since 2017’s “Contempt” and was initially released on the May 1st, 2020 as an unannounced surprise on Bandcamp’s no-fee day. Gilead Media is pleased to once again work with one of America’s most sonically vicious bands to bring this new work to the world.
Those familiar with Couch Slut’s relentless, sludging, noisy style will be pleased to find many of their favorite components of the band’s signature sound vividly present and pushed to an absolute extreme. Ripping guitars tearing through riff after riff following a punishing rhythm section that refuses to give you a moment’s respite. Scathing vocals suffocating any small sonic space left breathing within the songs. Couch Slut strip away all pretense and focus their power entirely upon exploring new colors and moods within their writing while somehow sacrificing zero strength or energy. Even during tracks that clock in at a slower tempo there is still an unimpeachable intensity that rivals any concept of traditional “heaviness” and renders it truly weak by comparison.
The band’s lyrical content continues to push the boundaries of the listener’s comfort by broaching themes of drug use, mental illness, trauma (all topics past listeners will find familiar in Couch Slut’s music), while also discussing issues of underage prostitution and domestic violence. The weight and importance of these topics is handled masterfully and truly forces the listener to deeply evaluate a large volume of emotional responses by the end of their listening experience.
This album is not a casual listening experience by any stretch. This is an active experience. When you press play on this album you must be prepared to be affected. You will not simply listen to these songs, you will feel them deep within your gut. This is not background music. There is nothing passive about this.
