Protection Spell, 2021, Oil on panel, 24×24”
“I have been listening to a long time favorite of mine, Songs Ohia (Jason Molina). I tend to listen to his work heavily during troubling times. One of the times I saw him, he had a tour only EP for sale, Protection Spells; a very raw recording that feels incredibly intimate. Jason’s music can at once connect me to sadness and uplift me at the same time.
I enjoy ambiguity and pepper my work with it often. In my Protection Spell, the thorns are equally protecting and threatening. Are the roses creating a barrier with their beauty or promising to overgrow and suffocate the sparrow even further? The meanings are unclear.
It is obviously a time when any kind of force field around ourselves and those we love is welcome; a protection spell/prayer/intention etc.
